Research on moringa by PICN seminar speaker Dr. Carrie Waterman was the focus of Amy Beaudreault’s Blog on the Huffington Post. Dr. Waterman is a National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Career Development Grant recipient at UC Davis.

Dr. Md Iqbal Hossain, an alumni of the Graduate Group in Nutritional Biology and the Program in International and Community Nutrition at UC Davis, has been awarded the International Healthcare Award. The award was presented in a recently held International Conference on Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatobiliary Transplant and Nutrition, February 11-14, 2016 in Jaipur, India.

Since 2008, Kathryn Dewey has coordinated a massive, international research effort called the “iLiNS”, or International Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements Project. The project focuses on formulating and evaluating cost-effective, lipid-based supplements — much like peanut butter — that have shown promise for improving nutrition for children and women in impoverished nations. Recent results indicate that fortified, lipid- or fat-based nutritional supplements provided during pregnancy to women in Bangladesh reduced stunting, abnormally low weight and small head size in babies born to these women.

At the 65th Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau Germany, the PICN post-doctoral research fellow, Maxwell Barffour, received the Young Scientist Award in recognition of his research and interest in malaria, anemia and micronutrient status.

The UC Global Health Institute (UCGHI) has announced the 2014-2015 cohort of UCGHI GloCal Health Fellows. Two PICN students, Kendra Byrd and Juliana Haber, were among the recipients.
