Research in maternal and child nutrition focuses on how a mother’s diet before, during and after pregnancy, and infants’ and young children’s nutrition, influence growth, development, and long-term health outcomes of both mother and child. The first 1,000 days—from conception through a child’s second birthday—are especially critical because this period shapes brain development, immune function, and growth. Adequate intake of essential nutrients during this time helps reduce the risk of stunting, micronutrient deficiencies, and chronic diseases later in life. Findings from research conducted at the Institute for Global Nutrition guide public health programs and policies that support maternal well-being and give children a strong foundation for lifelong health.
