Students completing the Designated Emphasis in Global Nutrition will be expected to fulfill the usual course requirements for the Ph.D. degree of the program to which they are accepted and also will be required to complete a set of core courses directly related to global nutrition. Each student enrolled in the Designated Emphasis in Global Nutrition should gain competency in material from each of four major fields of study: global nutrition, epidemiology, biostatistics, and social and behavioral sciences. In addition to the required courses in these fields, students also participate in a weekly seminar series designed to review current research in the field. Additionally, students will complete a dissertation research project under the general thematic area relating to nutritional problems affecting lower income communities or disadvantaged groups globally.
To be considered for the program, students must submit an application for admission to the Designated Emphasis, ideally during their first year of study, and meet with the Director of the Designated Emphasis in Global Nutrition in order to plan their course schedules. One faculty member from the Designated Emphasis must be included on the student’s qualifying exam committee and dissertation committee. Upon completion of the dissertation, the candidate must file a final certification form for the Designated Emphasis with the Office of Graduate Studies. All forms are available on the Graduate Studies website.
