This prestigious annual award recognizes an individual or a project for outstanding achievement in research relating to the nutrition of infants and children.
Dr. Brown’s exemplary career has spanned more than four decades, with vast contributions in pediatric nutrition research. Nearly all his achievements were performed during a long career at Johns Hopkins University and UC Davis, in conjunction with scientists and collaborators in Peru, Guatemala, Bangladesh, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso and several other countries. In addition to his academic positions, Dr Brown worked for the major NGO Helen Keller International in Senegal and as a Senior Program Officer at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
A hallmark of his research has been to advance knowledge that will translate into solutions to improve nutritional status, health, and survival of infants and young children in low- and middle- income countries. His nearly 400 papers include highly referenced works on the relationship between nutritional status, infectious diseases and childhood growth; appropriate dietary treatment of acute childhood diarrhea; and the diagnosis and control of specific vitamin and mineral deficiencies through public health intervention programs.
The AAP Committee on Nutrition announced its recognition of Dr. Brown during its annual meeting in October, 2021.
