Bess Caswell and Rochelle Werner Recognized as American Society for Nutrition Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Finalists

Bess Caswell and Rochelle Werner have been named as Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Finalists in the topic areas of (1) Maternal, Perinatal and Pediatric Nutrition and (2) Global Nutrition, respectively. The Emerging Leaders is a program of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) to recognize the highest quality research presented by students and young investigators at NUTRITION 2020 LIVE ONLINE. 

More than 1,000 abstracts were submitted by students and postdoctoral fellows and the Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science program aims to recognize the top 15% highest scoring abstracts as finalists. Abstracts were rated by more than 500 nutrition scientists.

“Through this activity, the American Society for Nutrition celebrates the achievements of our rising stars,” stated Richard Mattes, PhD, MPH, RD, President, American Society for Nutrition. “The Society looks forward to watching their future contributions to advance our understanding of nutrition science and practice.”

At the upcoming Nutrition Live Online 2020 Conference June 1-4, Dr. Bess Caswell will present her abstract: “An Egg Feeding Intervention Increased Protein Quantity and Quality Among Young Malawian Children.” Dr. Caswell is a postdoctoral scholar in the Institute for Global Nutrition, specializing in dietary assessment and food- and agriculture-based nutrition interventions.

Doctoral student Rochelle Werner will present her abstract: “Intake of Free Sugars Among Young Children in Rural Malawi." She is a third year PhD student in the Graduate Group in Nutritional Biology completing a Designated Emphasis in International and Community Nutrition.
