Research Focus Area

My research focuses on micronutrient intake and nutritional adequacy among U.S. populations using NHANES data. I apply advanced statistical methods to estimate usual dietary intake and examine trends, food sources, and disparities to inform nutrition policy and intervention strategies.

What sparked your initial interest in the field of global nutrition?

I have a background in nutrition epidemiology shaped by both academic training and hands-on experience. I worked with the Food Fortification Initiative (FFI) and later with the WIC program in New York City, where I saw how nutrition policies directly impact communities. I have also worked in China, South Africa, Rwanda, and the U.S., which deepened my interest in global health and cultural contexts of nutrition. These experiences led me to pursue a PhD in Epidemiology at UC Davis and training with the Institute for Global Nutrition, where I combine nutrition science with quantitative methods to inform public health solutions.

Is there a specific project or paper you are particularly proud of?

I am particularly proud of my dissertation work on estimating usual micronutrient intake using NHANES data and the National Cancer Institute method. This project integrates dietary intake and supplement use to better reflect total nutrient exposure. It also examines how food sources contribute to nutrient intake, which has important implications for dietary recommendations and nutrition interventions.

How do you see your research impacting the field of global nutrition and/or people around the world? 

I hope my research contributes to a better understanding of micronutrient intake and dietary patterns across populations, especially among vulnerable groups. By improving how we estimate total nutrient intake from both foods and supplements, my work aims to provide more accurate evidence for nutrition guidelines and fortification strategies. Ultimately, I hope this research helps inform policies and interventions that are more targeted, equitable, and effective in addressing micronutrient deficiencies in both the U.S. and global settings.

When you aren’t working or studying, what do you do for fun?

Outside of research, I enjoy creative activities like making handmade jewelry and caring for my small balcony garden. I also love photography, especially capturing everyday moments with natural light. In addition, I enjoy staying active through sports. I love scuba diving, surfing, and skiing or snowboarding in the winter. These activities help me stay grounded, recharge, and bring balance to my academic life.
