UC Davis Hosted U.S. Launch of 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission Report
The Institute for Global Nutrition, in partnership with EAT and the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, hosted the U.S. launch of the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission on Healthy, Sustainable, and Just Food Systems in May 2026. The symposium brought together researchers, industry leaders, and practitioners to discuss the latest scientific evidence on transforming food systems to improve human health while protecting the planet.
The event was hosted by Sonja Y. Hess, Interim Director of the Institute for Global Nutrition and featured keynote presentations by Fabrice DeClerck, Chief Science Officer at EAT and Principal Scientist at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and Walter Willett, EAT-Lancet Commission Co-Chair and Professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The panel discussion included Ermias Kebreab (UC Davis), Jean-Xavier Guinard (UC Davis), Kue Her (UC Davis), Claire Kremen (University of British Columbia), Greg Drescher (The Culinary Institute of America), and Danielle Veenstra (Almond Board of California), who explored pathways for translating the Commission's findings into research, policy, agriculture, and food innovation.
The 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission concludes that transforming global food systems is essential to improving health, protecting the environment, and advancing social justice. The report updates the Planetary Health Diet using the latest nutrition science, expands its assessment to include all nine planetary boundaries, and introduces social foundations that place equity and human rights at the center of food systems transformation. Commission modeling shows that a combination of healthier diets, more sustainable agricultural production, and reduced food loss and waste could prevent up to 15 million premature deaths annually, substantially reduce environmental impacts, and help bring food systems within Earth's ecological limits.
