Food Fortification Prevents 7 Billion Nutrient Gaps Annually—But Could Triple Its Impact, Landmark Study Finds
A new study published in The Lancet Global Health finds that large-scale food fortification programs—adding essential vitamins and minerals to staple foods such as flour, rice, oil, and salt—currently prevent about 7 billion inadequate micronutrient intakes worldwide each year at a cost of just $0.18 per person. The study was led by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) in collaboration with researchers from the UC Davis Institute for Global Nutrition, UC Santa Barbara, the World Bank, and Tufts University, and provides the first comprehensive global assessment of both the health impact and costs of existing fortification efforts across 185 countries. Salt iodization alone accounts for nearly half of current benefits, reducing global iodine inadequacy by 89 percent, reinforcing fortification’s status as one of the most cost-effective public health interventions.
The analysis also identifies major opportunities to expand impact. By improving industry compliance, aligning national standards with World Health Organization guidelines, and extending programs to high-need countries, food fortification could prevent up to 25 billion micronutrient inadequacies annually—more than triple current levels—at a cost of about $1.15 per person worldwide. Despite this potential, the authors caution that fortification is not a silver bullet; even under optimal conditions, billions of nutrient gaps would persist, requiring complementary investments in dietary diversity, targeted supplementation for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and young children, and access to affordable healthy diets. The study further underscores the need for careful monitoring as programs scale-up, to minimize risks from excessive intake of certain nutrients while maximizing population-wide benefits.
